Friendship Peak

Friendship Peak at 5289 meters is one of the most accessible high-altitude peaks in the Himachal Himalayas, making it a popular choice for mountaineers looking to gain experience above 5000 meters. Located in the Pir Panjal range near Manali, the peak offers a perfect blend of glacier travel, snow climbing, and ridge walking without requiring advanced technical skills. The expedition typically spans 6-7 days from Manali, passing through the lush meadows of Solang Valley before ascending into the alpine zone above the treeline. The route traverses the Lady Leg glacier and involves moderate snow slopes of 35-45 degrees near the summit pyramid. On a clear summit day, climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and the vast Pir Panjal and Greater Himalayan ranges stretching across the horizon.

The standard route begins from Solang Valley and follows the trail through dense deodar and birch forests to Dhundi. From Dhundi, the path climbs steeply through the Beas Kund meadows to reach the moraine camp at approximately 4000 meters. The next stage involves crossing rocky moraines to establish the Lady Leg Base Camp at 4200 meters. From base camp, the route ascends onto the Lady Leg glacier, navigating through crevasse fields to reach the high camp at around 4700 meters. The summit push involves a pre-dawn start, climbing moderate snow slopes of 35-45 degrees using fixed ropes where necessary. The final ridge section is relatively straightforward, leading to the broad summit plateau at 5289 meters. Descent follows the same route, with most teams returning to base camp on summit day and reaching Manali within two days of the summit.
