## Getting There
Manali is well-connected to major cities across North India. While there is no airport or railway station in Manali itself, multiple comfortable options exist to reach this mountain town from Delhi, Chandigarh, and other hubs.
## By Air
The nearest airport is **Bhuntar Airport (KUU)**, located 50 km south of Manali in the Kullu Valley. Key details:
- Direct flights from Delhi (1 hour) on Alliance Air and IndiGo
- Flights are weather-dependent and frequently delayed or cancelled during monsoon
- From Bhuntar, take a pre-booked taxi (₹1,500–2,000) or local bus (₹100) to Manali
- Consider flying to Chandigarh as a more reliable alternative, then driving up
## By Road from Delhi
The Delhi-Manali highway (NH3/NH21) covers approximately 530 km and takes 12–14 hours:
- **Volvo buses**: HRTC and private operators run overnight AC buses (₹1,200–1,800)
- **Self-drive**: Route via Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali
- **Private taxi**: Costs ₹6,000–8,000 one-way; can stop at Mandi or Kullu en route
- The Aut tunnel has reduced travel time by about 30 minutes
- Avoid driving at night on mountain roads beyond Mandi
## By Train
The nearest major railway station is **Joginder Nagar** (narrow gauge) or **Chandigarh** (broad gauge):
- Take a train to Chandigarh (well-connected to all major cities)
- From Chandigarh, board an HRTC Volvo or hire a taxi (6–7 hours to Manali)
- The Kalka-Shimla toy train is scenic but adds significant time to your journey
## Tips for a Smooth Journey
- Book Volvo buses 2–3 days in advance during peak season (May–June)
- Carry motion sickness medication for the winding roads beyond Mandi
- Start road trips early morning to arrive before dark
- During winter, check road conditions as highways may close temporarily due to snow
- The Atal Tunnel (Rohtang) connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti year-round since 2020
